Keeping Kids Healthy: Preventing Meningitis-A Race Against Time
Nothing can upset a community more than an outbreak of meningitis. Only 3,000 Americans contract it each year, but when there's a report of a meningitis case, parents often panic and pull their children out of school.
But how bad IS meningitis? The answer is that it can be deadly -- but thankfully, there are things you and your child can do to prevent it. Join host Dr. Winnie King and meet one family from a small town in Pennsylvania whose 14-year-old daughter came down with Meningitis. She survived, but with disabling results; and she'll share how her brush with death changed her and her family's lives forever. We'll also hear, from a leading Infectious Disease expert, how a new vaccine for kids in middle school and the higher grades can prevent meningitis in your child.
Guests:
Faith Hoenstine, Age 19 Sandi Hoenstine, Faith’s mother Carol Baker, MD -- American Academy of Pediatrics Spokesperson on Meningococcal Meningitis; Attending Physician, Texas Children’s Hospital; Professor of Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine.
